- MACBETH ESSAY ON TRAGEDY
-
- Tragedy is such a broad topic, and it is used in many plays because of
- the dramatic effect that it provides. Similarly, in the plays of
- Shakespeare, tragedy is the main basis for the play because it adds
- entertainment and dramatic effect. In the play Macbeth, tragedy takes
- place because of: the unfortunate events that people do not deserve,
- age, innocence, experience, and character flaws.
- In the play Macbeth, unfortunate events that people do not
- deserve is a major aspect of tragedy. King Duncan was a very kind
- ruler, who was loved by all of his colleagues and his people. Kings
- were believed to be associated with god and those who injured kings also
- injured god. The audience is first informed of the respect concerning
- King Duncan when Ross makes his first appearance. When Ross appears,
- the first thing that he says is "God save the king!". As a result of
- the unending ambition by Macbeth and his wife, Duncan was killed because
- of his position as king. The guards outside of the king's room were
- killed by Macbeth to cover up his deadly deed. Because Macbeth was a
- very noble person who was hailed by the king, and the country's people,
- he held a high position in the king's army and he had spent his entire
- military career defending his country. His character was brought into
- unfortunate events because of his ambition to be king. Macduff was also
- very noble and held the position of thane. His family was killed by
- Macbeth's murderers because of Macduff's loyalty to the family of king
- Duncan. Banquo was a good soldier and was very devoted to his country
- and was brutally murdered because Macbeth wanted all of the power for
- himself and his family. It is possible to blame some aspects of tragedy
- on unfortunate circumstances that people do not deserve.
- Age, innocence, and experience are important components of
- tragedy. King Duncan was very innocent because he was loved by all and
- caused none of his people harm. Despite of his innocence, he was
- subject to the ambitious rage of Macbeth for the title of king. Because
- Macduff's son was very young and innocent and he was killed by the
- murderers sent by Macbeth. Macduff's wife was innocent and was also
- killed by Macbeth's murderers. Banquo, who was also a leader in the
- country's army, was an innocent person and had lots of experience
- fighting and was still brutally murdered. Young Siward was young and
- experienced fighting, but he lost his life to the cruelty of Macbeth.
- He was also very loyal to his country's rightful king by standing up to
- Macbeth and fighting for the cause of good. Young Siward shows his
- defiance to Macbeth when they talk before they have their tragic fight.
- Young Siward says, "Thou liest, abhorred tyrant; with my sword I'll
- prove the lie thou speakest." Age, innocence, and experience are main
- parts of tragedy.
- Character flaws are negative characteristics because they can't
- be altered. Lady Macbeth was a very ambitious, demanding, and pushy
- person. This ambition made her push her husband to the murder of people
- around them that they could call their friends. Because Lady Macbeth
- can't live with the emotional hardships brought on by her actions that
- she goes insane, and that leads her to her death. Lady Macbeth does not
- understand the thoughts, hesitations, and feelings of the people around
- her. When Macbeth shows his hesitation and dislike of the idea of
- killing the king, Lady Macbeth does not sympathize with him and pushes
- him even harder to commit the deadly deed. Lady Macbeth goes into the
- gruesome details of the extent that she would go to for having Duncan
- killed. She says, "I would, while it was smiling in my face, have
- pluk'd my nipple from his boneless gums, and dash'd the brains out, had
- I so sword as you have done this". In the beginning, Macbeth has
- doubts, but he is told that a real man would do it and eventually he
- gives into the wants of others. King Duncan, being a very kind person,
- was very trusting of everyone around him because he felt that he had
- nothing to fear. This over trusting of everyone around him leads him to
- his death by the ambitious Macbeth. Character flaws are a major part of
- tragedy.
- The main parts of tragedy include: unfortunate events that
- people do not deserve, age, innocence, experience, and character flaws.
- Because Shakespeare used tragedy as a main aspect in his plays, they
- were renowned for their entertainment value. Tragedy is such a broad
- topic, and it is used in many plays because of the different effects
- that it carries. Unfortunately, it seems that tragedy is an everyday
- occurrence and will always exist.
